“I grew up in London in England. I’ve had a great life. I grew up after the war, my dad was in the D day landings in France. The whole war thing was really hard on him and affected him for the rest of his life. We had a great family, they looked after us, we had everything we needed without being spoiled. When I was 15, my parents decided that we would all emigrate, 3 children and them. We emigrated to Whyalla in South Australia, simply because we had a family member over there that sponsored us and my Dad had a job guaranteed and a house as well. I guess that made it a bit easier on them, especially because Mum was pregnant at the time and we had an Australian brother born just after we arrived. Then I got married, we moved to Adelaide and then to Alice Springs. Then to Kangaroo Island. My second husband and I lived in Alice Springs and we wanted to retire somewhere that was not tropical as he had been in cyclone Tracy in Darwin. We wanted to be on the coast so came over one year for a look and made the decision then and there to retire here on KI. Took another 7 years, bought a block of land and then a little house. This is where I plan to be until I fall off the perch. We love the community feel about the place and the nature and it’s just such a lovely place to be away from the rat race. Good spot to be.”
